Why this paper matters
Hindi-medium candidates often assume the Hindi language paper needs no preparation. The 2010 Mains paper attached to this page is a good reality check. It is the compulsory Hindi paper from that year’s Civil Services Main Examination, supplied as an archived official PDF.
Snapshot
- Year and stage: 2010, Mains
- Paper: Hindi (compulsory)
- Language: Hindi
- Origin: commission’s archive of past papers
What to look for while reading
Pay attention to how formal the Hindi is. Official language differs from the Hindi of newspapers and conversation, and the examiners write for a candidate who can manage both registers. Notice the instructions as well: they tell you how answers must be written and what the booklet expects, details that are easy to miss when you only scan questions.
A three-step method
- Attempt it as a closed-book test with a strict time limit.
- Mark every word you hesitated over and look up its standard form.
- Compare your writing with a polished reference text and rewrite one answer to match that clarity.
Fitting it into the Mains calendar
The language requirement sits beside the main Mains papers rather than inside General Studies. A single sitting every few weeks is plenty. Because this paper is from 2010, use it for skill-building and not for guessing the present format.
Who else can use it
Students from other mediums who want to sharpen their Hindi, and teachers building practice sets for Hindi-medium batches, will find the paper useful in the same way.
Printed support
For the bigger papers, bound collections of UPSC previous-year questions and Mains notes are available as print on Competer, and they pair well with this single-paper download.
Common mistakes of fluent speakers
Because Hindi is spoken at home, candidates relax and then lose marks for casual spellings, mixed registers and loose sentence construction. Official papers expect standard written Hindi: correct matras, consistent use of terms and a measured tone. After attempting the file, underline every phrase you would never use in a formal letter and replace it. Doing this once makes you aware of habits you cannot otherwise see, and the improvement is visible within two or three practice rounds, even without extra reading lists or coaching help.
As always, verify any rule about language papers from the latest official notification, since the scheme may have changed after 2010.
