What this set holds
Three Civil Services (Main) General Studies question papers are combined on this page. They come from the 2009 and 2010 sittings, are available in English and Hindi, and were saved from the commission’s former website. None carries an answer key or a model answer.
| Sitting | Paper | Size and length |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | General Studies Paper I | About 0.2 MB, page count not stated |
| 2010 | General Studies Paper II | 20 pages, about 0.3 MB |
| 2009 | General Studies Paper II | 16 pages, about 1.9 MB |
Paper I of 2009 is not part of this page.
Why older GS Mains papers still teach something
Before the current four-paper structure, the Mains had two general studies papers, and the questions were often broader and shorter than today. Reading them shows the roots of today’s themes: Indian polity, economy, social issues, international affairs, science and technology, and the environment. They also show how the examiner words a question to invite a balanced, multi-dimensional answer.
Using the papers with a pen
- Pick five questions and write full answers inside the word limit you would use in the exam.
- Underline the directive word in each question and check that your answer actually does what it says.
- Rewrite one answer after a day, with a sharper introduction and a clear conclusion.
Matching them to the syllabus
Because the current syllabus distributes these themes across several papers, tag each old question with the paper it would belong to today. This turns the set into a thematic question bank for answer writing practice.
Whom it helps
Mains aspirants, answer-writing groups and mentors are the natural readers. Prelims-stage students may find it too early to benefit.
Self-evaluation grid
After writing an answer, score yourself on four points: relevance to the question, coverage of dimensions, clarity of structure and use of examples. A simple out-of-ten mark for each point shows where practice should go next.
Share one answer a week with a friend or mentor and ask for a single suggestion. Small, steady feedback improves writing faster than occasional long reviews.
Printed material
Competer offers printed UPSC previous-year books, answer writing material and mains test series that complement these scans.
