Here is the compulsory Bengali language paper from the 2013 UPSC Civil Services (Main) Examination, kept as an archived official PDF. At about 1.5 MB it is a fuller scan than the 2014 version, so images may take a moment to appear on a mobile network. Only the questions are provided.

How the file was produced

The size suggests a page-by-page image of the original sheet. Such scans preserve the layout, including the printed instructions, mark allocations and spacing for each question, and that makes them handy for building an authentic mock. Zoom into the margins, because marks and time limits are often printed there.

Using it as a mock

  1. Place a clock in front of you and note the start time.
  2. Write each answer on lined paper, leaving margins as in a real answer book.
  3. Stop when the time limit ends, even mid-sentence, to see how pacing affects completeness.
  4. Mark yourself by checklist: meaning, grammar, spelling, structure.

Who gains the most

Aspirants from West Bengal, Tripura and Bengali communities elsewhere gain most, but so do candidates who studied Bengali only in school and now need to move from reading comfortably to writing carefully. Coaching centres for eastern India can use it for classroom tests as well.

Reading across years

Study it together with the 2014 Bengali paper. By comparing, you can tell whether question types are stable or changing, how long the passages are and what kinds of composition topics the Commission seems to favour. Keep notes in a two-column table, one year in each column.

Keeping perspective

This language paper functioned as a qualifying hurdle in the scheme of that time. Spend enough hours to be sure of passing, and then give the rest of your energy to the scoring subjects. A mistake many candidates make is polishing the language paper at the cost of General Studies revision.

Printed shelf

For those scoring subjects, bound previous-year question books of UPSC are available in the store, giving a physical set that is easy to annotate.

Mark-wise reading

Look at how much of the paper rewards content and how much rewards correctness. If composition carries a large share, give it more of your practice hours than grammar drills. If translation is prominent, build a mini glossary of administrative and news vocabulary in both Bengali and English. A simple tally after every mock tells you which section is your weak link.
