Overview of the resource
The Nepali paper on this page was set for the compulsory Indian-language requirement of the 2013 Civil Services (Main) Examination. It is stored as an archived official PDF, approximately 2.0 MB, containing the question paper alone.
Who writes Nepali
Nepali is widely used in Sikkim, Darjeeling, parts of Assam and other regions of the north-east and the Himalayan belt. Candidates from these communities have the option of taking Nepali rather than another language for the compulsory paper. For them, this document shows exactly how the Commission tested the language.
Plan your use
| Step | Action | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the paper slowly | Identify question types |
| 2 | Attempt under timing | Test speed |
| 3 | Check with a fluent writer | Catch errors |
| 4 | Rewrite weak parts | Build habits |
Language details worth remembering
Nepali is written in Devanagari. Candidates who know Hindi typically find script reading easy but confuse similar words, postpositions and verb forms between the two languages. Make a short list of such false friends as you go, because they show up as small errors that cost marks without feeling like real mistakes.
Time and effort
Because this is a qualifying paper in the scheme of that time, a measured effort is right. A handful of timed attempts across the final months, combined with daily reading in Nepali newspapers or magazines, usually builds adequate confidence. Anyone starting from a weak base should begin earlier and add short daily writing.
Limits
The PDF does not carry answers, and a single year may not predict future patterns. Use the current official notification for the syllabus and qualifying norms.
Print option
For scoring papers, our printed UPSC previous year question books give you a more complete body of practice material.
Reading the questions carefully
Many mistakes in language papers come from answering what was not asked: a summary where a translation was required, or a long essay where two lines were enough. Underline the verb in each instruction, count the marks and match your length to them. This quick habit costs seconds and avoids wasted writing time.
Keep the PDF saved offline and note the date of each attempt on the first page, so you can see progress across the months without guessing.
